Azzedine Alaïa, the timeless and iconic fashion designer has died in Paris.
Azzedine alaïa the franco-tunisian fashion designer has died in paris aged 77 years old. he launched his brand in the early eighties and became a symbol of creativity and freedom. his clothes, mixing elegance with sensuality, were all imagined produced by alaïa himself in his studio in the heart of the marais. often designed at night without sketches, working directly onto luxurious material, like leather or mesh, adding zips up the back, ribbons, rivets and other details, sculpting the female body like nobody else. he had a deep sense of friendship, surrounded by many artists who loved dining in his home, intimately, the discreet man desired never to enter into any system, preferring his freedom and his own rhythm. (interview farida khelfa)his designs, commented on and often copied, toured the museums of the world ending at the palais galliera in paris in 2013, whilst his last show was presented out of fashion week, only when he’d decided it and once he’d deemed himself ready. he was a hero to all designers and the top models were always ready to walk for him, like naomi campbell, a very close friend, who he had taken under his wing when she first started out. she affectionately called him “papa”. (interview naomi campbell)interviews : farida khelfa:he’s the king of fashion, the king of couture, the king of style, of lines, of elegance, of texture, of all such things. naomi campbell:he’s the most unique designer in the world, and what he’s done, the last century, this century, for women and their bodies there’s no one else who’s done that for the shape of women and i love him very very much and i’m grateful to him for being my papa. music royalty free: bandit & nikit 2017
