Tod's Spring Summer Collection 2014 in Milan (with interview)
This is the first time that a tod’s runway show has called upon a talented and charismatic designer, alessandra facchinetti (ex gucci and ex valentino) to develop the ready-to-wear collection in line with the codes of this italian designer brand that specializes in leathergoods. this coherence is evident through the accessories and fashion where lightened leather, at its best, drapes and perforates graphic, geometric designs on flared skirts or shift dresses knotted at the shoulder. colours are at the same time soft and deep, combining pearl grey with wine red. plenty of freshness also emerges with puffball shorts, cotton shirts and crepe dresses gathered at the waist. alessandra passes the test by creating desirable and easy-to-wear pieces which perfectly match picot moccasins, fringed sandals or iconic bags, such as the sella from revisited lines.
the first things that i did when i started to work was to think about her lifestyle in a very large way because i think it was one of the strongest dnas that tod’s had and i think what they used to do in the past really delivered that. i think her relaxed and free spirit was exactly my goal.
i actually started to work on the accessories before i worked on the first collection because this is obviously the main (part of the business) and i started to really get my sensibility in terms of colour combinations and attitudes and then on top of that i tried to think that now she has these shoes and this bag so i tried to imagine other elements around her.
my goal was to achieve very fine, soft leather almost like cotton; this is why i used a lot of lasers to give more transparency and lightness with a very modernist approach with a block of colour, with the lasers and tried to create a new contemporary approach to leather.
there is no fashion heritage, that is true but i think that as a fashionable brand you don’t need that; you just need to have a respect of quality and an italian touch and this is another good point that there is a link there is between me and mr. della valle which i think is important for tods, to have someone who really knows where the strong elements are to play with.
